What is an ignition interlock device?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small device with a camera that is installed in a vehicle to measure an individual's alcohol concentration level. If the device detects alcohol, the vehicle will not start. The device is also designed to collect random breath samples while the vehicle is being driven. The length of time a participant must be on the IID program depends on the number of prior offenses on the driving record and the length of time the participant has lost driving privileges. This time period may be extended for any additional ignition violations.
